Gum disease is a progressive condition that slowly deteriorates the health of the gums, causing loose teeth, jaw bone loss, and an increase in the risk for systemic complications. Caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar, gum disease can be successfully treated in the first stage of gingivitis, characterized by tender, swollen, and bleeding gums. If gum disease is left to progress, patients may experience chronic bad breath and even tooth loss, in worst cases. Timely treatment of the earliest stage of gum disease, commonly known as scaling and root planing, can “deep clean” the area and prevent bacteria from spreading further.
Our scaling and root planing process is personalized to your specific oral health needs. During your 3-hour appointment, we deep clean the teeth above and below the gum line to remove all plaque and tartar buildup. We also apply medicine to the gums, and have you swish a special mouth rinse to further safeguard the treated area from bacteria buildup. Once treatment is complete, we send you home with a special tooth brush and mouth rinse designed to fight any future plaque, tartar, and bacteria. Our goal for this comprehensive scaling and root planing is to help ensure that you never need periodontal maintenance done in the future.
